3 Steps to Create the Power of Positive Thinking

To help you determine which way you lean, answer these questions:

  • Do I give excuses for why I haven't achieved a goal

  • When I feel fear do I tend to retreat

  • Have I been told I have a negative attitude

  • Do I think a lot about the bad things that may occur, creating anxiety

  • Do I blame others for problems that occur in my life

If you answered yes to any of the above, you have at least a level of negative thinking. It's okay - most of us do!

However, if you want to create more success, less stress, and a more purposeful life incorporating a stronger positive mindset will dramatically help.


How Negative Thoughts Affect Your Brain

Negativity releases a brain chemical called cortisol.


Here’s the deal. Cortisol is a stress hormone and is associated with the part of our brain which forms new memories. Negative experiences and thoughts release cortisol. Over time it becomes more challenging to form new positive memories.


Neuroscientists use a motto, “neurons that fire together, wire together.” This saying suggests our thoughts and experiences shape our brains.


According to Neuropsychologist, Rick Hanson, the synapses in our brains that fire frequently become more sensitive. Our experiences and thoughts can change our genes and grow new synapses. Literally, the structure of our brain can be altered - in a good or bad way.


Simply put – the more you allow negativity into your day, the more you create destructive mindset patterns. Eventually, you’ll decrease your happiness.


However, if you want to create more success, less stress, and a more purposeful life incorporating a stronger positive mindset will help dramatically.



3 STEPS TO DEVELOPING THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING

1. Responsibility


Instead of focusing on why you can't do something, begin to think of how you can make it a reality. My kids have it ingrained in their minds that I hate excuses.


My hubby and I have been entrepreneurs for 3 decades, so our kids grew up working for our businesses. When they had a challenge, they'd call their dad, who would often say, "I don't know. Figure it out." Today, my eldest son co-founded a multimillion-dollar marketing firm, and my youngest is in college, preparing to start his own business. It's all about mindset!


Harness the mindset of taking responsibility for the direction of your life. Avoid the blame game because it's a waste of energy and will never advance you.

2. Stay in the Present


Fear is based on the unexpected or the anticipation of what may happen. Most of the time, the thing you were scared of never occurs.

Recently, my assistant was up all night because of howling winds. The reason for her lack of zzz's was she was worried about a wild fire erupting. When I had her think this out, she realized she lived close to a freeway, and there are plenty of ways to escape. Also, her home is in a neighborhood, so someone would alert her. Do you see how her fear was wasted energy?

3. Push Yourself Out of Your Comfort Zone


I know I'm not the first person to say this, BUT it does bear repeating. Get out of your comfort zone! When we choose to stay in our safe place instead of going after what we sincerely want, it slowly erodes our confidence and self-trust. However, if you build an attitude of 'I can' and 'I will,' you'll soar! This is a positive mindset.
