Recently, I sat down with Jennifer Shultz, Los Angeles based stylist and image expert extraordinaire. Jennifer dresses many high-profile clients and celebrities, and puts on fashion shows that are to die for. She helps women find themselves through fashion. I asked her to share some of her fabulous tricks on how to present the image we want to the world. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:
1. Take care of yourself first.
Jennifer likened this to being on a plane during the flight attendant’s “in case of emergency” speech: you’re told to put on your own air mask before helping your child, because if you don’t take care of you, you can’t take care of those you love. When women feel good about their clothes, they have more confidence, stand up taller, and just get more done. So for all you busy moms and career ladies out there: take that extra 10 or 15 minutes to feel good about yourself. You want to be authentic, but you also want to represent who you are through your appearance.
2. Make your closet a place of love, not hate.
Jennifer organizes by color and likes to hang all her clothes on velvet hangers, so they don’t fall. Most women hate to have clothes all over the floor, and yet she found that many of her clients have messy closets. When you’re clothes are organized, they are a source of joy rather than stress. So hang those bad boys up!
3. Shoes are your entire look.
Jennifer was very emphatic about asserting the importance of shoes. If your shoes are coming apart, it can ruin an otherwise good outfit. This doesn’t necessarily involve buying a new pair every year. Instead, find a good professional to repair them. Jennifer found a “shoe guy” who saved her favorite pair of silver wedges for around twenty dollars! Invest in good shoes and the right shoe cobbler can help increase their lifespan.
4. Capris pants make you look shorter.
She highly recommends that women under 5 feet and 7 inches stay away from capris (hard news for me to swallow, since I love my little half pants!). She suggested that if they have to wear capris,
they pair it with some heels, so they look taller.
5. Stay away from baggy and black clothes.
A lot of women wear baggy clothes to hide lumps or bulges, but Jennifer claimed that this just exacerbates the problem. She was also not too keen on black. Color makes you look younger. It brings out something in your skin and hair, so she advised we ditch the black and try something with more flare.
6. You can find your signature look by being authentic.
No matter where you go, whether it’s to a business meeting or to your kid’s play, do you feel like yourself? Do you feel authentic? Jennifer stressed the importance of walking into any situation feeling like your “best boss babe.” When we feel like ourselves, we become more confident. And when we’re confident, we become happier.
Within 1.5 seconds, from walking into a room, a person is almost always judged by their appearance and style of clothing. Jennifer’s goal as the CEO of Jennifer Shultz Style, is to create more confidence in women and men, to help people look their best, and to make them feel like a million bucks. Whether it is on the Red Carpet, Business attire, a special event, or your everyday look, it is my passion to make an impression last.
